WELLSERVICES GWD PREVENTS NEAR-MISS COLLISION

Offshore drilling leaves virtually no margin for error. In a recent Mediterranean Sea campaign, a conductor casing began deviating at 1.8° – essentially heading straight toward a nearby existing well. With only about 0.8 meters of lateral separation, this put the operation far below industry safety limits. The International Steering Committee on Wellbore Survey Accuracy (ISCWSA) specifies a minimum Oriented Separation Factor (OSF) of 1.5 for safe drilling. In practical terms, the Gulf of Suez conductor’s clearance was well below the 1.0 OSF threshold, triggering an urgent collision risk scenario.

Immediate Action with Gyro-While-Drilling

To manage this critical situation, the team deployed a Gyro-While-Drilling (GWD) tool in the well. GWD delivers continuous 3D orientation data independent of magnetic interference. Real-time gyro surveys allowed engineers to monitor the actual well trajectory as drilling progressed. By having up-to-the-second measurements, drillers could steer corrective actions immediately, rather than waiting for separate wireline runs. In effect, the GWD data “saved the day” by confirming that the borehole stayed on the intended path and never encroached on the offset well.

Real-Time Data Improves Safety

GWD technology is known to enhance drilling accuracy and safety. It provides more accurate positioning without reliance on magnetics, which can be distorted in complex wells. Studies show that continuous gyro data boosts confidence in anti-collision management. For example, one case study reported that switching from drop-gyro surveys to an in-drilling gyro service improved real-time collision avoidance, allowing operators to “proactively manage collision risk with confidence” while also saving rig time. On this project, over 45 gyro surveys were taken during drilling with no extra rig downtime, translating into more than a day of rig-time saved compared to conventional methods.

Key Safety Measures

This near-miss highlights best practices for wellbore collision avoidance:

  • Early Gyro Surveys: Deploy gyro tools at the first sign of deviation. Real-time GWD data is essential when “precise borehole guidance is essential for collision avoidance”. Continuous surveying (often during every connection) ensures any off-track tendency is caught immediately.
  • Strict Separation Standards: Maintain safety margins per industry guidelines. The ISCWSA Anti-Collision rule requires an OSF ≥ 1.5 to proceed. In low-clearance situations (OSF < 1.0 here), immediate corrective action – including halting drilling if necessary – is mandated.
  • Redundant Measurements: Use both magnetic MWD tools and gyro surveys. Gyro-While-Drilling is preferred in magnetically disturbed or high-risk zones, as it “provides more accurate measurement data without worrying about magnetic interference”. Combining data sources verifies well position from multiple angles.
  • Proactive Planning: Conduct detailed anti-collision modeling and maintain up-to-date surveys of all nearby wells. Multiple offset surveys, tilt-matching, and conservative trajectory plans reduce the likelihood that a well will go off course in the first place.

In the Gulf of Suez case, prompt GWD intervention prevented what could have become a catastrophic collision. Industry experts warn that in offshore “batch drilling” operations, “collisions between boreholes are extremely easy” and could cause catastrophic HSE events. Fortunately, this operation turned out safely: the well reached target depth without incident, preserving well integrity and avoiding multi-million-dollar losses.

Conclusion

The lesson is clear: when a conductor or any well path starts to go off-track, early gyro-while-drilling surveys are not optional but critical. They provide the immediate data needed to correct course and stay within safety bounds. As proven by this operation, disciplined anti-collision practices and advanced gyro technology together form the defining line between success and disaster in complex offshore wells.
